Irregular Periods

Irregular periods can be a problem for many women and a real source of concern. If you are trying to become pregnant it is very important that you are able to reliably and accurately predict the length of your cycle so you are able plan appropriately. Also for general health in is best that your body is able to follows its natural cycles.

There are several different variations of irregular periods. Short cycles, long cycles, cycles that vary between long and short and also the total lack of any cycle. All of these variations will have major implication in terms of your fertility and the ease by which you are able to become pregnant. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help restore your natural cycle by regulating your hormones and restoring balance to your body.

As the Kidneys are the root of the reproductive system it is imperative that they are strengthened and many of the acupuncture points employed and herbal formulas used will focus on the Kidney system. The Kidneys are seen to control the hormones and both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been shown to have a large effect on the body’s hormones especially the gondotropines (reproductive hormones).

The quality and abundance of the blood is also seen by Chinese medicine as a major factor in the regularity of your menstrual cycle. If your body lacks enough blood to nourish the uterus it will not develop toward the end of your cycle and the menses will be delayed. Another factor is that the quality of the body maybe poor, in Chinese medicine this is described as blood stagnation. If the blood stagnates in the uterus the period can be prevented from arriving and the cycle lengthened.

The Liver is seen as the main organ responsible for the movement of energy and controls cycles in the body. If you are exposed to constant levels of stress or extreme emotion this can disrupt the Liver leading to the menstrual cycle shortening or lengthening.

As the acupuncture and herbal medicine works on the body the menstrual cycle will start to return to its natural length. As the system returns many of the associated symptoms that accompany the period will start to resolve as well. These can vary from period pains, p.m.s., breast tenderness, constipation or diarrhoea, headaches etc.
